**Important Information About The Current Infestation Of Armyworms In Our Area**
We continue to receive many reports of armyworms in Northeast Mississippi and West Tennessee. Army worms love to eat turf grass. An infestation can start in a small area but spread quickly as the worms mature and begin to eat. Army worms can eat an entire lawn to the soil level in one to three days.
Armyworms are the larval stage in the life cycle of the Armyworm Moth (pseudaletia unipuncta). The worms feed for about four weeks, but do most of their damage in the last ten days of that feeding period. They reach a maximum size of about two inches in length, and then return to the soil to complete pupation, reemerging as moths about one week later. After mating, the moths lay eggs in grasses and the cycle repeats itself. More than one generation per year is normal. Armyworms may become more numerous when conditions are wet or flooding has occurred.
