Dethatching Service
In addition to our trusted programs for lawn and landscape care, TruGreen of Jackson & Tupelo offer several beneficial services tailored to your lawn's individual needs.
What is thatch?
Thatch is a layer of decomposed roots, leaves and stems that collects on top of the soil. This layer of
organic matter supports many beneficial soil microorganisms, buffers soil temperatures and makes the lawn
more resilient. It is good for your lawn until it becomes thicker than about one-half inch.
Why is thatch a problem?
When thatch is too thick, it prevents water, nutrients and weed or pest control products from reaching the
soil. It also encourages the growth of weeds that root in the thatch layer. Thatch build-up is a particular
problem with Bermuda grass and Zoysia grass.
What should you do if thatch is too thick?
The best course of action is to dethatch your lawn with equipment specifically designed for that purpose. The
thatch will need to be vacuumed or raked after dethatching. Mowing before and after may be desirable for the
best appearance. Dethatching should be done early enough in the season to allow the grass to fill in and look its best.
What will you gain by dethatching?
Dethatching your lawn will allow it to become thicker and greener. Your lawn should require less water, and the weed
control and fertilizer products applied to your lawn will be more effective.
